All those who have not drunk the Al Gore koolaid will be thinking, by now, that the Copenhagen junket is still on schedule because of inertia rather than logic. Or perhaps, that it was a good time to be had by thousands of people and you will only be able to pry their cold, dead hands off the airplane tickets. Otherwise, the recent revelations about climate scientists cooking the books, should come as good news. These scientists who have shocked the world with statistical acrobatics, are the very people who can plunge this world into an orgy of misspent trillions. Now, if sanity prevails, the hot air crowd will no longer be giving directions to the lemmings approaching the edge of the abyss.

I have believed all along that the scientific community’s circulatory system relies too much on grants, to keep it alive, and that makes them suspect in the delivery of any cataclysmic news that is likely to inflate their importance. But there is more than money involved here. A profession that must survive on handouts, will be the first to believe that the redistribution of wealth is generally a good thing. (That’s why so many teachers are dangling off the left edge.) This allows the climate change hysteria to become a grand cause, accomplishing the castigation of free enterprise (which shackles them to sundry profit driven causes), aid to the world’s wretched (everyone’s favourite conscience soother), and the transfer of authority to a new world socialist movement, all in one shot.

So their motivation and actions are not that big a surprise. History is full of socialist movements which relied on solidarity amongst the activists, and suppression and persecution, of the skeptics. And - entirely in character - they are all cheerleaders of some lunatic, economic boondoggle. All of these traits are in evidence here, and the boondoggle is of a proportion which would humble even Jean Chretien. Imagine the lunacy of putting a crushing burden on the productive industrial “polluters” of the world, as ransom for their continued “polluting”, and sending the money to the Mugabes of the world because they have not yet had the chance to pollute. The only visible outcome of pursuing this Lewis Carroll fantasy, would be to replenish the Boeing and Mercedes fleets of the world’s beggar tyrannies. As to the decrease of global warming, it would come to pass after the great bonfire of wealth had consumed itself.
