The Blind Brain Surgeons of the Auto Industry

There is a clear and present danger that the restructuring of the domestic auto manufacturers is being dictated by people whose socio-economic ideology is characterized by the fools who participated in "earth hour". The movement itself, is populated by those whose hearts beat stronger than their brains. Like the Mississauga family who, oblivious to the carbon offensiveness of a candle, managed to set their house on fire, further adding to their environmental footprint.

Can those within the Obama administration, who must be in tune with his pending carbon cap-and-trade lunacy, not be reflecting that lunacy on their auto industry decisisons? If the members of the automotive task-force are in tune with this coming job destroyer, is it not possible that they are about to set their own automotive house on fire? Does their political curriculum vitae provide them with a clue of what they are doing?

I have been an enthusiastic observer of the auto industry for over forty years. The word enthusiastic is important because it implies that the culture of the automobile was significant to me and kept me from lumping cars with refrigerators in terms of utility. I have also been employed by that industry for said period. In that time I learned, not only where spark plugs and alternators can be found, but also where integrated power modules are and what their circuitry does. Where the yaw sensor is and how its input  is vital to the function of the electronic stability program. And so on. And I’ll bet that the brain surgeons who are threatening to rework the fundamental aspects of the automobile, in order to save GM from itself, don’t have a clue what I’m talking about.

I can tell from the things they say, that we are headed for trouble. For example, the merger of Chrysler and Fiat is being touted by Obama for the wonderful exchange of technology which Chrysler will benefit from. What technology? Automakers which can develop an electronic system which compensates for driver error, don’t need technology help. Fiat’s specialty is making motorcycle sized engines and cars. They have never been able to successfully market vehicles in the US. Put the clues together and you see another fallacy. Who says Americans want nutshell sized cars? Only those who can’t see the difference between a refrigerator and an auto. Americans love their trucks (over twenty million in the last ten years) and they go for small cars only temporarily and as a result of high gas prices and doomsday portents by the anti-carbon crowd.

Obama talks about energy self-reliance, but trips on his own ideology. Self-reliance is available by simply taking the tethers off the oil exploration industry. But, that won’t happen because this government has the green shades on its glasses. It is going to reinvent the wheel instead. It is going after the illusion of creating jobs by pursuing untried and immature energy boondoggles. A Spanish research project just concluded that each green job created destroys two existing jobs.

The administration that wishes to follow these policies, and wants to save GM, has just chopped its head off. I believe that GM should have gone out of business about fifteen years ago. Its cars were truly awful at that time. Now they are world class in style, quality and technology. Obama’s people should keep their hands off the product. The product is not the reason the domestics are in trouble. And much of the groundwork for the crisis was laid by previous government meddling. Fix the fundamentals and leave the product choice to the consumer.

Actually, lots of us do not want all that complicated stuff in a large car. You guys are not listening to the people who can actually afford to buy a car!!! I just want to go from A to B mostly in the city and listen to a nice stereo. I do not need automatic memory seats, cruise control, and it would be nice to have words, like radio, on, off etc., back. When a light goes on, I hate having to stop and read the manual. Why make a car that goes faster than the safe speed limit? And no, I want to drive myself, not have my car turned into a VCR-like aircraft console that I can’t operate. Waste! Yes, the North American auto industry does need Fiat. Better, yet, buy an import that never needs repair. If you want to play cars with your friends, have fun on a race course somewhere.

You make excellent points, but I’m sure that amongst the current market selection you can fulfill the simple needs you demand. That does not mean that everyone aspires to such simplicity, or that the manufacturers can compete on simplicity alone. Furthermore, an admittedly shrinking number of men do dwell in cars because of the culture and not just their utility. But the world will be a dull place when we can no longer play at cars, or whatever suits us, just because someone else sees no merit in the diversion.
